The School of Art and Design, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University seeks a dynamic artist and educator for a one-year position in Ceramic Art at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. The position will begin in August 2024. The salary range for this position is $49,000-$52,000, depending on experience. 

We seek a dynamic artist who is excited about the future of ceramic art. The successful candidate will be building an exhibition record/recognition in the field and be enthusiastic about teaching. We are seeking applicants immersed in one or any combination of genres; vessel, ceramic sculpture, sculpture/installation, design, or forms at the intersection of all these. While the applicant's relationship to material specificity or plurality may be open and variable, interested candidates should possess a strong background in ceramic methodology with an ability to speak to contemporary practice across genres. Additionally, we encourage applications from studio artists with any of the following competencies including but not limited to: craft/art/cultural theory; glaze chemistry/material science; digital methodologies/technologies; program conceptualizing and building. A strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and teaching is expected. 

The Division of Ceramic Art, within the School of Art and Design at Alfred University, has a distinguished history as a premier institution for education in the arts and fosters a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary environment for research and practice. The Division of Ceramic Art is comprised of six full time faculty, a teaching fellowship, a rotating international chair, and three full time technicians. The scope of the Division of Ceramic Art is wide-ranging, embracing history and innovation, tradition, and emerging forms of visual art. The material intensive curriculum develops skill and intellect through theory, technological research, and creative practice. Undergraduate and graduate programs are strongly intertwined. In our two-year MFA program, graduate students navigate wide-ranging practices in the visual arts.

Qualifications: 
Minimum qualifications include an M.F.A. in studio art or design or its equivalent and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will have an active record of exhibitions and projects at the national level and growing recognition in the field; three years teaching experience or equivalent is preferred; salary will be commensurate with experience. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Engage with divisional & school service including, but not limited to, recruitment, advising students, and other administrative duties expected from faculty.
  • Commit to the university's goals of mentorship, inclusion, and intersections.
  • Teach 24 credit hours per academic year working at both undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Serve as a model of professionalism and act as a resource for students within the teaching-­learning environment.
